I do not recall in my years of living in Davenport ever witnessing the high degree of efforts to cover up malfeasance in city hall. Or have I witnessed the degree of public apathy as evidenced by the tiny turnout in the last election. The two are related. Citizen disregard encourages city officials to shirk their duty to the few citizens who want the whole truth revealed.
The imperative is for the vote to be properly obtained the first time. If a newly naturalized citizen has reason to believe that their ballot may be a provisional ballot then they should bring additional proof with them. Problem solved.
What's seemingly not discussed is the lack of voter records being kept up-to-date over the years. It's not an uncommon joke that, "Grandpa was a ____________ until he died and now he votes __________"
Clean up the old records and add the new. Hey, it's what that the Recorder's Office and SOS are to do all the time, not just during election years.
Well said, Ed. I think Pate is partially responding to the extremists in his own party to "do something". Attornet General Brenna Bird has joined the Virginia lawsuit with more than a dozen other Republican AG's. Iowa Republican Party Chair Jeff Kaufmann gave a Trump nominating speech at the RNC, and says women's freedom of choice is a non-issue for Republicans. (Iowa Press, 8/5/24). Iowans are sick of Republican BS and non-issue irrelevancy. We see through the hypocrisy.
In Iowa if Pate and Bird can accuse 4 people of voter fraud out of 1.5 million they will say that they knew people were taking advantage of their voting rights, and more folks could be doing it too.

With Republicans you are guilty unless you can prove otherwise.
