My Grandma is right across the street. I remember growing up and went to school there too. My youngest one Did at least. It was a best school. It's sad to see it go.

Thanks form memorializing Monroe. Monroe, Jefferson, McKinley, Lincoln and Washington were the new schools of the 1940s. The schools were all of similar design with craftsmanship that could not have helped but imbue every student with a sense that someone cared about their education. Granted the huge oak entry doors were a struggle for younger kids but it provided older students an empowerment boost by helping the little people they once were.

It is interesting that people seem to be taking less interest in what happens to these old stalwarts. I remember my first year on the Davenport Board when we vote to close (but not demolish) Grant and Johnson Schools. The pushback was palpable. Board members were voted out for voting to close.

This change in public attitude about our schools is interesting and deserves attention.

My first job as a speech therapist included Monroe Elementary school. Fond memories from the mid 1960's
