These brazen Republican officeholders remind me of the loutish petty criminals rousted in convenience store parking lots. Police bend them over their squad cars, slap on the cuffs, then the suspect bawls loudly, "that ain't mine" when the frisking officer tosses a baggie of meth rocks & a blackened glass pipe onto the car hood.
True story from a former colleague who was stopped by a Johnson County sheriff’s deputy while returning to his home in Cedar Falls from a concert in Iowa City.
“Do you know why I stopped you?” the deputy asked.
My colleague replied, “Um, because I have Black Hawk County plates and it’s 2 o’clock in the morning?”
Yes. It is a thing.
Another Black friend was part of a high school sports officiating crew. They were stopped in western Iowa. He was sitting in the back seat. The officer let them go. My friend started laughing. His crew mates were puzzled as to why.
“You just got The White Man’s Pass!” he said.
Yeah. It’s a thing. My friend knows. He was stopped on the nicest street in the “white” part of town one Sunday morning (or what some here call “the rich district”) - which is where he lived. He was simply going back home to pick up a dish his wife had forgotten for church. The officer checked his ID, said “Oh, It’s you,” and let him go.
Yeah there’s no racism. I’m sure many of our state’s leaders will attest to that since they thoroughly enjoyed The Cosby Show and The Jeffersons and even rooted for Michael Jordan and Walter Payton. And that Sammy Davis Jr. sure was one hell of an entertainer…
Not all bias training is created equal. When educating an officer about bias it is important to him/her to stress that we are all biased. We visualize only what is normal to us. Train them to be aware of their bias and check it.
It is amazing how quickly the Republicans are tearing down what once made Iowa great.

Why not? It works for Trump.
